What restrictions apply to cycle insurance?

Like all insurance policies, there are some important exclusions, limits, and security requirements you’ll need to be aware of.

Your policy may not cover claims where:

  • Security requirements have not been followed.
  • Your bike was not secured using a required Sold Secure Gold or Diamond approved lock.
  • Original photos of your bike, accessories, and lock were not uploaded within 14 days of the policy starting.
  • You cannot provide proof of ownership.
  • Your bike is left unattended without being properly secured.
  • There is no evidence of forced or violent entry in a theft claim.
  • The bike is used for commuting or competitive events without the relevant optional cover selected.
  • The bike is used for business, courier, hire, or professional cycling purposes.
  • Damage is caused by wear and tear, corrosion, poor maintenance, or mechanical/electrical breakdown.
  • The bike is loaned or hired to someone outside your immediate family.
  • Theft or damage occurs while the bike is with a postal or courier service.
  • The bike falls outside the policy definition, including:
    • E-bikes exceeding 15.5mph / 25kmh assistance or 250w motor output.
    • Any cycle subject to Road Traffic Act requirements.

Additional restrictions and limits include:

  • Bikes can be insured up to a maximum value of £15,000 each.
  • Worldwide cover is limited to 90 days in any policy period.
  • Public liability cover does not apply in the USA or Canada.
  • Claims for theft or malicious damage require a police incident or crime reference number.
  • Cover only applies to UK residents.
  • Excesses apply to claims as shown in your policy schedule.

You should always read the full policy wording and schedule for complete terms, conditions, exclusions, and security requirements.

Where can I find my bicycle frame number?

Most bicycles have a frame number stamped into the metal under the bottom bracket.

If it’s a carbon frame, the number will be etched into the surface or displayed on a sticker.

Occasionally, the frame number will be on the inside of the chain stay or on the down tube or top tube.

What bike locks are required?

To be covered for theft claims, your bike must be secured using a Sold Secure Gold or Diamond rated lock that is appropriate for the value of your bike.

The policy requires:

  • A Sold Secure Gold or Diamond approved lock.
  • The lock must secure the bike through the frame (and wheels where applicable) to an immovable object when away from home.
  • Original photos of both your bike and lock must be uploaded to your customer area within 14 days of the policy starting.
  • You must be able to provide proof of ownership for the lock if requested.

The policy also states that theft claims may be declined if:

  • The correct approved lock was not used.
  • The bike was not secured according to the policy’s security requirements.
  • The lock used was not suitable for the value of the insured bike.

Examples of acceptable immovable objects include:

  • Fixed bike racks
  • Ground anchors
  • Secure railings fixed into concrete or stone
  • Properly fitted vehicle bike racks

For the latest approved locks and security ratings, you can check the Sold Secure database: Sold Secure

Why do you need cycle insurance?

Even the best rider can hit a bit of bad luck – from a simple pothole on the way to work, to wiping out going off-terrain, which is why we think even weekend riders should take out an insurance policy that covers all eventualities.

Just like car insurance provides drivers with peace of mind, bike insurance allows you to enjoy the open road free from worry. You’ll know that should something happen while you’re out and about, you’ll be back in the saddle in no time.
