Insurance Group 1 Cars

All cars are allocated to an insurance group numbered 1 to 50, with group one usually being the cheapest to cover.

The insurance group is based on various factors and group 1 cars tend to be cheaper which would cost less to repair. It would also usually have fewer features with a small engine and not much in the way of power – think of nippy city cars and you’re on the right lines. They’re not for everybody but if a small run-around is suitable for you, you could end up saving on insurance!

Young drivers

Insurance group 1 cars are excellent for young drivers. Age and inexperience count against people who’ve just passed their test and insurance as a new driver can be extremely expensive. Having a car in a lower insurance group can be one way to keep the costs down as much as possible.

Cars in Group 1

A selection of just some of the cars that fall into insurance Group 1:

Citroen C1 Airplay/Airplay+/Vibe

Whilst there are more important things than looks, Citroen have aimed their appeal to those of us who like bright, interesting colours.

Fiat Panda Active/Active Eco

The newer Panda can be more expensive to insure so aim for models from 2004-2011.

Hyundai i10

The 1.0 SE Blue model is very fuel efficient and has a better ride comfort for longer journeys.

Kia Rio

Only the 1.1 litre engine qualifies for the group 1 insurance category – all other options are likely to be more expensive.

Nissan Micra Hatch

A relatively new version of the Micra (complete with USB and Bluetooth) is the only one which falls into group 1. It is much more spacious than most of the other options although it is less economical than some of the other options on this list.

Skoda Citigo

A more spacious interior than it looks, usually slightly cheaper than the VW Up! albeit essentially the same car.

Vauxhall Corsa Expression/Expression Ecoflex

A consistently popular car for learner and young drivers with the added bonus of good fuel economy.

Volkswagen Up

Well designed and spacious for a small car, choosing either the Take Up! or Move Up! will get you into group 1.

Group 50 car?

At the other end of the scale, we thought we’d see what models fall into the Group 50 insurance category – according to Parkers these are just some of the cars that will give you higher insurance costs! Not to mention tax, fuel and maintenance...
  • Audi R8 and E-Tron
  • BMW i8
  • Ferrari F430
  • Jaguar F-Type
  • Land Rover Range Rover Velar
  • Lotus Exige and Evora
  • Nissan GTR
  • Porsche Macan
  • Tesla Model 3 and Model S
There are a number of factors which dictate your insurance premium. However if you’re trying to keep costs down overall and do mainly short, local journeys an insurance group 1 car may reduce your insurance costs, especially as a new driver.
