How to Cool Down a Hot Car During a Heatwave

Getting into a car that has been sitting in the sun can be uncomfortable, especially during a heatwave.
Turning the air conditioning straight to full may seem like the quickest solution, but a few simple steps can help release trapped heat and cool the car more effectively.
Let the hot air out
Before setting off, open the doors or windows briefly to let the hottest air escape.
If it is safe to do so, opening windows on opposite sides of the car can help create a flow of air through the car.
Start with fresh air
When you first turn on the ventilation, use fresh-air mode and keep the windows slightly open for a minute or two.
The air outside may initially be cooler than the air trapped inside the car, helping to lower the temperature more quickly.
Switch to recirculation
Once the hottest air has escaped and the car has started to cool, switch on the air recirculation setting.
This reuses the cooler air already inside the vehicle rather than drawing in warmer air from outside, which can help the air conditioning work more efficiently.
Remember to switch back to fresh-air mode occasionally to improve ventilation and reduce the chance of the windows misting.
A few extra summer tips
Where possible:
- Park in the shade
- Use a windscreen sunshade
- Carry drinking water on longer journeys
- Check coolant and tyre pressures before setting off
- Make sure your air conditioning is working properly
- Never leave children, vulnerable passengers or pets unattended in a parked car, even for a short time.
Plan for longer journeys
Hot weather can put extra strain on both drivers and vehicles.
Before a longer trip, check that your car is ready for the journey and that you have suitable breakdown cover in place.
