What Does Wear and Tear Mean?

Wear and tear refers to the natural deterioration of a car’s interior and exterior through day-to-day use and ageing. It is completely unavoidable as cars age, even with routine servicing (which can identify worn parts before they become a danger).

If you have leased or financed your vehicle, most companies will have “reasonable wear and tear” clauses, which accept small scratches and light interior scuffs. In terms of extended car warranty, policies don’t usually cover wear and tear, but it can depend on the level of cover you have, and the provider you choose…

What are Some Common Wear and Tear Items?

Common items that can succumb to wear and tear include:

  • Tyres – these deteriorate quicker than other car components due to their constant contact with the road.
  • Brake pads and discs
  • Suspension
  • Battery
  • Spark plugs
  • Drive belts
  • Filters
  • Clutch

The body of your vehicle can also experience wear and tear; the paint may fade or peel, and could be scratched due to stones on the road.

Is Wear and Tear Included in ALA Policies?

Yes, wear and tear is covered on our platinum policies, our most comprehensive coverage, until the vehicle turns eight years old or reaches 100,000 miles. This refers to the gradual deterioration associated with the normal use, age and mileage of the vehicle and its components.

All components covered on the platinum policy are also covered under the wear and tear aspect. You can find out more about what is covered on our warranty coverage page here.

Elements not covered by our platinum coverage include:

  • Any mechanical breakdown resulting from an external cause such as freezing, overheating or corrosion
  • A claim arising from a lack of servicing – wear and tear will not be accepted if you haven’t kept up with the servicing of your vehicle
  • A claim arising from neglect, abuse or reckless acts
  • Issues resulting from any modification no approved by us
  • Any existing faults

You can read our Platinum policy document here to find out more about what is and isn’t covered.
