Breakdown cover can be a great component for motorists, offering reassurance and helpful assistance when unexpected vehicle breakdowns occur. But it is necessary to understand the intricacies of such policies, especially their transferability. You may be curious about transferring your breakdown cover to another vehicle or driver, but is it always possible?

In our comprehensive guide, discover whether someone else can use your breakdown cover, whether it can be transferred to another driver or vehicle, and what you can do if you sell your car before your breakdown cover expires. We will also guide you through our different coverage levels at ALA, helping you make the best choice for you.

Can Someone Else Use My Breakdown Cover?

Breakdown policies can be broadly divided into two categories: vehicle-specific cover and personal cover. Personal cover is attached to the individual, and they can get assistance regardless of the vehicle in which they’re traveling. Vehicle-specific cover, however, applies to a specific vehicle, and any legitimate driver of that car can utilise the breakdown facility.

ALA Insurance offers breakdown cover, which is individual-specific. This means that the cover is attached to the insured person, and the driver who the breakdown cover and vehicle is assigned to can avail the breakdown services. Consequently, ALA policies do not apply to individuals not named in the policy. Therefore, according to our breakdown cover terms, if the vehicle and breakdown cover is in your name, only you and your vehicle together are covered.

If you get a new car during your policy, it would be updated with the new vehicle’s details. Also, if someone else is driving your car and it breaks down whilst you are a passenger, your breakdown cover still applies.

We have four levels of breakdown cover at ALA: roadside, roadside and recovery, Total UK and Total UK and Europe. Visit our breakdown cover page here to find out more.

Can You Transfer Breakdown Cover to Another Driver?

As our breakdown cover is driver-specific, the policy is automatically linked to the covered individual.

This structure implies that the breakdown cover is not transferable to any other driver of the vehicle unless they are named in the policy, and cannot be transferred to another driver. The cover remains with the initial car and driver so that any other driver using it, even with permission, cannot receive assistance.

However, if you are a passenger in your covered car, you can still receive assistance, as long as you are with your vehicle.

Can You Transfer Breakdown Cover to Another Vehicle?

Similarly, our breakdown cover is designed to provide cover for a specific policyholder. This means that the policy can be transferred to another car. If you change your vehicle at any point during your cover period, you should let us know as soon as possible.

If the policyholder buys a new vehicle or wishes to replace the vehicle that is covered, then they would need to change the details on the current policy.

The price of your breakdown cover can differ based on the type of cover you need, as well as any added extras. You can start building your breakdown policy quote here.

What if I Sell My Car Before my Breakdown Cover Expires?

The sale of a car prior to the expiry of its breakdown cover is at stake as far as the balance of the policy entitlements is concerned. In our breakdown cover, the policy can be transferred to a new vehicle.

If you sell your vehicle before the breakdown cover expires, you will need to get in touch with us as soon as possible. You are advised to inform us of the sale so that we can update your details and arrange for any required changes or new policy terms.

You can get in touch with us to discuss your policy details at any point; to enquire further, get in touch with us here.
