Used car warranties
All brand-new cars are covered by a manufacturer warranty.
A warranty is an insurance policy which protects you if there are any mechanical or electrical faults with your car, with the cost of the repairs being met by the manufacturer.
Manufacturer warranties usually last for up to 3 years or 60,000 miles from new, although some manufacturer like Hyundai and Kia offer 5 and 7 years respectively.
If you decide to keep your car beyond the original warranty period, or if you are buying a used car which is no longer covered, you might want to protect your vehicle with an extended warranty.
This is an optional insurance policy which continues to protect you after the initial manufacturer warranty has ended.

Why buy an extended warranty?
By its very nature, a mechanical or electrical breakdown of your vehicle is unexpected. Although you could go for a long period without any issues a problem could arise at any time and, unless you have prepared and saved for such an event in advance, you may not be in a position where you can comfortably cover the cost yourself.
Extended warranties can include additional features such as covering the cost of a hire car or onward travel costs - with so many of us relying so heavily on our cars these days, most of us would struggle if our car was out of action for an indefinite stretch of time.
Problems with your car can be stressful and inconvenient, not to mention expensive. The cost of repairing or replacing parts on your car as it gets older can be high, as well as motorists in generally seeing an increase in running costs.
An extended warranty can give you the peace of mind of knowing that the insurer will meet these costs.
Which warranty do I buy?
Whilst an extended warranty can be bought from the dealer at the time of buying your car, these can be costly and you may not get the level or standard of cover you expect. The alternative is to look online at specialist independent suppliers as the quality of the cover can be much more appealing and you can save up to 40% on the premium.
The cost of an extended warranty can vary and is based on several factors including the make, model, age, and mileage on the car, as well as the level and quality of cover provided as standard and any additional options you select.
Like every type of insurance, not all warranties are created equal and reading the small print is essential in making sure that there are no nasty surprises when you need the cover most.
A good extended warranty will cover the cost of the parts and labour required to fix the problem with your car, have fewer exclusions and useful additional features. With RAC Warranty these include:
